Sairkrishna Turns Out to be WGM Killer

The 2nd round of the LIC/ONGC/MTNL sponsored Commonwealth Chess Championship 2006, being held at Eskay Resorts - Borivali, witnessed the giant killing run of 10-year old G.V. Saikrishna from Vijayawada, who demolished WGM Eesha Karavade to move into the 3rd round with the prestigious bracket of the top seeded players with a full score.

Sai, who had shocked WGM Tania Sachdev in the 1st round, has an enviable record in the age-group championship at both Asian and World Championship. With this performance he now appears to have moved into the top league.

Meanwhile, the seeded players had no problems in 2nd round. On the top table, defending Commonwealth Champion and former World Championship Challenger GM Nigel short had no difficulty in disposing off the challenge of the young kolkata player, Somak Palit in just 37 moves from the black side of the Four Knight’s Defense.

On table 2, three times National Champion and current Arjuna Awardee, GM S S Ganguly proved that he is the real champion by winning with a clinical finish in a French Defense against experienced IM Rahul Shetty in just 32 moves. The early exchange of queens proved no problems for Ganguly as he created lot of weaknesses in the opponent’s camp. He romped home by creating a passer on the ‘b’ file.

On the 3rd table, GM Sandipan Chanda made the short work of the challenge of young B. Adhiban in the closed Sicilian Defense in 35 moves.

The 4th board witnessed the battle between GM Ziaur Rahman of Bangladesh against Tanvir Gellani of Pakistan. In a modern defense game Tanvir, playing Black, matched the play of seasoned GM for most part of the game, calling Ziaur to use all his experience to quell the challenge in over 60 moves.

The field is now led by a group of 28 players with a full score of 2-points in a very strong field of 168 players in this US $ 14000 prize money tournament.
