Sethuraman, Shyam
Among Leaders

Two Tamil Nadu boys, S.P.Sethuraman and Shyam Sundar moved into joint lead
with 5.5 points after scoring upset victories in the seventh round of the
Asian Junior Chess Championship being played at Bapu Samaj Sewa Kendra in
the capital on Nov 12.
Also in joint lead is GM Nguyen Ngoc Truongson of Vietnam who beat a
serious title aspirant Gogineni Rohit.
Two rounds remain to be played in this event which concludes on Nov 14.
Tied for the fourth place with five
points is Deep Sen Gupta,
G.N.Gopal, Aswin Jayaram, Dzhurabek Khamrakulob (Uzb), B.Adhiban, Rahul
sangma and M.R.Lalith Babu.
In the seventh round, Sethuraman of Chennai upset the calculations of
former world Under-12 champion Deep Sen Gupta of Kolkata with the white
pieces in a French defence. Deep hit a wrong plan and paid the price for
that. Shyam Sundar of Tamil Nadu crushed the national junior champion
Abhijeet Gupta of Rajasthan in just 31 moves for a place in the top. On
his part, Troungson beat Rohit in 44 moves. All the three leaders won with
white for a whitewash. There are 49-players from seven countries in this
9-round Swiss format event. The winner will get the IM title and along
with it the GM norm.
Leader losing on the top table also occurred in the Asian Junior girls
section too. But the joint leader, Kiran Mohanty of Bhubaneswar, on the
second board won to wrest sole lead with a victory with the black pieces
over Amruta Mokal. Kiran jumped to sole lead with six points from seven
games. Two rounds remain to be played in this 32-player event.
Kiran should thank Mary Ann Gomes for shocking WGM Hoang Thi Bao Tram of
Vietnam on the top board. Mary was at her tactical best in this encounter.
In the second place with 5.5 points are Mary Ann of Kolkata and Lakshmi
Sahithi of Andhra Pradesh. Tied for the fourth place with five points are
Hoang Thi Bao Tram (Vie), Kruttika Nadig of Bangalore and R.Preethi of
Madurai. Players from six nations are competing in this section. Winner
will get a WIM title and a WGM Norm.
