Lakshmi Sahithi, Mary
Ann In Joint Lead
By Arvind Aaron
Overnight leader Kiran Monisha Mohanty of Orissa was displaced from the
lead by Lakshmi Sahithi of Andhra Pradesh. After the eighth and
penultimate round in the Asian Junior Chess Championship at the Bapu Samaj
Sewa Kendra in the capital, Sahithi and Mary Ann Gomes of Kolkata are in
joint lead with 6.5 points from eight games. Tied for the third
place on six points are R.Preethi of Madurai and Kiran Mohanty. Amruta
Mokal is in clear fifth place with 5.5 points. Sahithi and Mary Ann will
clash in Tuesday's final round to decide the champion. Kiran Mohanty was
beaten by Sahithi easily while Preethi shocked the top seed Hoang Thi Bao
Tram of Vietnam to move up and raise her chances of a medal in the
tournament. Indians ruled this section and this victory made it quite
clear.
Similar to the girls section, GM Nguyen Mgoc Truongson of Vietnam and
M.Shyam Sundar of Tamil Nadu won and shared the lead in the Asian Junior
Championship.
They will face each other in the final round to decide the winner.
Truongson found the gaps in S.P.Sethuraman's defence and won to move to
6.5 points. The third place is shared by G.N.Gopal of Kerala and Aswin
Jayaram of Tamil Nadu on six points.
Shyam Sundar plays the most important game of his career on Tuesday
morning. A victory can make him an IM and GM norm holder in one stroke.
The event indentified the best male and women chess player in the under-20
age group. Full details: www.delhichess.com
