Asian Junior Chess Championship @ New Delhi

Gopal Maintains Lead

By Arvind Aaron

Kerala's G.N.Gopal maintained his slender half point lead after sharing points with Gogineni Rohit of Andhra Pradesh in the fifth round of the Asian Junior Chess Championship in progress at the Bapu Samaj Seva Kendra in the capital on November 10.

Gopal was slightly lucky to salvage half a point against Rohit after struggling for equality in the game. Facing the Sicilian Najdorf from Rohit, Gopal chose the English attack. Black won an exchange and was in the drivers seat for most of the session.  However, the continuation did not go well for Rohit. White had a tactical shot and that led to an even endgame. The result was a draw and the justified.

Gopal moved to 4.5 points from five games and is followed by five players including GM Nguyen Ngoc
Truongson of Vietnam. The Asian Junior champion gets the International Master title and together with it a grandmaster norm as a bonus.

In the Asian Junior girls event being held alongside, four players, Hoang Thi Bao Tram of Vietnam, Kruttika Nadig, Kiran Monisha Mohanty and Soumya Swaminathan are leading with four points from five games.

There are nine rounds in this competition. The tournament decides the best Asian player in Boys Under-20 and Girls Under-20.

Based on a Delhi Chess Association press release.
