India Decimates China
By Arvind Aaron
Indian combined team rose to the big occasion and blanked China 3-0 in the
crucial fifth round match between the top two seeds at Doha on Dec 10.
"Our players hit form at the right moment," said AICF Secretary D.V.Sundar
over phone from Doha.
Harikrishna was at his attacking best to down Wang Yue. Krishnan Sasikiran
overcame Bu Xiangzhi with the black pieces on the top board. Koneru Humpy,
the golden girl avenged her rapid chess loss to beat Zhao Xue and settle
her Doha account within a week.
No country has given China such a thrashing in chess in recent memory. The
credit should go part to the pre-Asian Games coach Lev Psakhis who put the
right atmosphere in the camp to handle China.
This big win had stretched India's lead from one point to 2.5 points.
India is on 13/15 and there are still four rounds or 12 games left. Qatar
is in second place with 10.5 points.
Top seed India faces Uzbekistan in the sixth round. With India hitting
such high form, the Uzbeks should be dreaming of a draw. In reality Humpy
should make a difference to both the teams on Monday.
Standings: 1 India 13/15, 2 Qatar 10.5, 3 Uzbekistan 9.5, 4-5
Turkmenistan, China 9 each, 6-7 Indonesia, Iran 8.5 each...21 teams.
