Sasikiran Enters 2700 Club
By Arvind Aaron
FIDE, the International Chess Federation has released its quarterly Elo
ratings to take effect from January 1, 2007. India's Krishnan Sasikiran
who helped us win the second gold medal in the Combined Teams at the Asian
Games in Doha has upped his rating to 2700. He is now ranked No.21 in the
world.
Former world champion Veselin Topalov of Bulgaria still tops the rating
chart though he is only four Elo higher than India's Viswanathan Anand.
Counting, Anand's wins from the Germany league which the star said is "Elo
in the bank" the Indian is perhaps No.1. India continues to have a third
player in the World Top 50. Pentala Harikrishna slipped to 33 in the world
rank.
Posting all-time personal best ratings, Koneru Humpy (No.2) and Dronavalli
Harika (No.43) are in the World Top 50 among women along with
S.Vijayalakshmi (No.23). Humpy posts 2567 her best ever with an increase
of 22 over the previous list. Harika has gained 68 Elo points to reach
2421 and she has had a good run at the Commonwealth in Mumbai besides
winning the World Under-18 title at Batumi. Vijayalakshmi has also
increased but is still below her all-time best achieved in October 2005
which came from winning Biel Super Category Women in August 2005.
Overall, India has 2740 rated players in the list and it is ever
increasing. We are also 13 in the best ten average ratings of nations. In
the Junior Girls rating list, Humpy continues to top it. Humpy is only
second to Judit Polgar in the regular women's list. Also in the Junior
list, we have Harika holding the eighth place and Eesha Karavade
twelfth.
