Doha Asian Games - 2006

Koneru Humpy Strikes Gold
By Arvind Aaron

Koneru Humpy of Vijayawada won the Asian Games gold by winning the rapid chess tournament for women scoring eight victories from her nine rounds on December 4. The golden girl of Indian chess is also ranked No.2 in the world for many years behind Judit Polgar of Hungary.

Humpy's victory in the Asian Games is a worthy meritorious one as China is a force in women's chess and they competed. Humpy was too strong for most of her opponents. She lost one game to Zhao Xue of China in the sixth round on Sunday.

Humpy's progress was keenly followed on the Internet by various chess players including chess legend Viswanathan Anand who were hoping for a big Humpy win.  The celebration in the AICF is normal and chess has delivered gold in the very first opportunity.

The victory of Humpy is a win for our system and Indian chess is looking for new areas of success. Humpy is in Doha and also looking for her second gold in the classical chess team event which starts after a free day on Tuesday.  She will be in the combined Indian team together with Sasikiran and Harikrishna.

India will be top seed in that too and Humpy usually delivers more that her expectations. India can expect yet another gold in the classical team event at Doha.
