Deepan & Barua Joins Ganguly in the Lead
By Praful Zaveri

The 7th round of the Atul 44th National A Chess Championship, which is in progress here at Atul Club witnessed the change of lead as the overnight joint leader, GM Pravin Thipsay lost to GM Deepan Chakkravarthy and the other leader, top-seeded Surya Sekhar Ganguly agreeing for a short draw against Abhijit Kunte. With GM Dibyendu Barua outwitting Lanka Ravi, the lead is now shared by 3-players, Ganguly, Deepan and Barua.

In the game between Deepan Chakravarthy and Pravin Thipsaty, the development was even from both the sides but Deepan created weaknesses on the dark squares, which allowed him to win a pawn on the 32 move. Thereafter, with a beautiful co-ordination of his Queen and two Knights the Madurai based Indian Oil player created an all out attack on Black’s King. Pravin resigned when he lost two more pawns with no counter threat.

On the 04th table, former national champion, GM Dibyendu Barua took advantage of an opening error made by Lanka Ravi in the opening phase of the game to score a win in 34-moves to join Ganguly and Deepan Chakravarthy in the lead.

The three leaders are followed by a pack of 8 player, Abhijit Kunte, D.P. Singh, G.N. Gopal, M.R. Venkatesh, Pravin Thipsay, Rathnakaran, Arun Prasad and Suvrajit Saha – who are holding the 2nd position with a score of 4.5 points.
