Ganguly
& Thipsay Moves into the lead

The defending champion and top seeded, GM Surya Sekhar Ganguly moved into
the top gear by winning his second consecutive round to move into the lead
jointly with GM Pravin Thipsay with 4 points apiece after five rounds in
the Atul 44th National A Chess Championship in progress here at Atul Club,
Atul.
On the top table Ganguly had no difficulty in defeating IM Abhijeet Gupta
in 38 moves from the white side of the Petroff Defense opening.
On the 2nd table the former national champions, GM Dibyendu Barua and GM
Abhijit Kunte preferred to preserve their energy for the latter rounds and
agreed for a quick draw in just 10 moves. While the game on the 3rd table
between G.N. Gopal and GM Deepand Chakravarthy also ended in a draw after
29 moves.
On the 4th board, five times former national champion, GM Pravin Thipsay
surprised IM Lanka Ravi with the rarely played Bishop’s opening and won
the game in 60 moves. With this win, Thipsay now moves into the lead with
Ganguly and will be now clashing with him in the next round. The leaders
are followed by a group of five players on 3.5 points namely, Dibyendu
Barua, Abhijit Kunte, G.N. Gopal, Arun Prasad and Deepan Chakravarthy.
The tournament is a 13-round swiss league tournament for the 45 selected
players to decide the national champion of India. The prize fund of the
tournament is Rs. 2.75 Lakhs, which is sponsored by Atul Ltd.
