Ganguly Stops Deep Sengupta

The Indian national champion for last 3-consecutive years, GM Surya Sekhar Ganguly put an end to the dream run of young IM Deep Sengupta in the 4th round of the Atul 44th National ‘A’ Chess Championship being played here at Atul Club, Atul. Deep Sengupta was in the joint lead after round three whereas Ganguly was adrift of the leaders by half a point.


The round also witnessed the youth posing tough challenge to experience as the veterans Grandmasters, Pravin Thipsay and Dibyendu Barua just managing to hold against the their young rivals, International Masters, Arun Prasad and Abhijeet Gupta respectively on the top two boards.


There is a now a big group of 9-players in the lead after the end of round 4 – Ganguly, Kunte, Deepan Chakravarthy, Thipsay, Barua, Abhijeet Gupta, Lanka Ravi, Arun Prasad and G.N. Gopal.


The surprise results of the day were the losses of GM Neelotpal Das against Lanka Ravi, IM M.R. Venkatesh against G.N. Gopal and IM G.B. Prakash against Swapnil Dhopade:
