IM Deep Sengupta Shocks Kidambi
By Praful Zaveri

Eighteen year old International Master from Jharkhand, Deep Sengupta produced a shock result on day 3 of the Atul 44th National A’ Chess Championship, being played here at Atul Club by beating the seasoned IM Sundarajan Kidambi to join a pack of four players in the lead with a score of 2½ points.

Sengupta, playing black, opted for a very sharp line in the Slav defense opening against Kidambi. The game developed on the theoretical lines and most of the pieces were exchanged by the 23rd move. It appeared that the game was heading towards a draw. However, Kidambi opted for a pawn sacrifice to launch an attack on Black’s King by taking control of the 7th rank with his Rook. But Sengupta was able to find accurate defense to thwart off the attack. His extra pawn proved decisive, forcing Kidambi to surrender on move 46.

The game between overnight leaders, GM Dibyendu Barua and IM Arun Prasad turned out to be a dull affair as neither player were willing to take chances and it ended in a draw after just 23 moves.

Veteran Grandmaster Pravin Thipsay showed his class by quelling the challenge of K. Rahtnakaran of Kerala from the white-side of the French defense game in a marathon battle lasting 68-moves. In a closed position Thipsay launched a decisive attack on move 45 by sacrificing his Knight to create two connected passers. The rest was a matter of technique for Thipsay to romp home. With this win Thipsay now shares the lead with 2½ points along with GM Barua, IM Arun Prasad, IM Deep Sengupta and IM Abhijeet Gupta.

Still 9 more rounds remains to be played in this 13-round swiss league tournament for 45 selected players to decide the national champion of India.
