WGM Swati Ghate Upsets
By Praful Zaveri

Former national champion, Grandmaster Dibyendu Barua of West Bengal and young International Master, S. Arun Prasad surged ahead into the lead with two points apiece after as many rounds in the Atul 44th National ‘A’ Chess Championship in progress here at Atul Club.

While the games on the top three tables ended in a draw, the 4th board game between Gujarat’s Valay Parikh and Dibyendu Barua proved interesting. Barua, playing white, opted for the French Defense to the ‘e4’ reply of Valay, who opted for an off-beat line to steer the game into unknown territories. Both the players castled on opposite wings. The game went on equal footing however, an error by Valay allowed Barua to win a piece on the 50th move. Valay resigned immediately.

On the 07th table, IM Arun Prasad scored an expected win over the lowest seeded player, Sudhir Sinha to join Barua in the lead. A big pack of 14-players are following the leaders on the 3rd spot with a score of 1.5 points.

The notable upsets of the day was the loss of GM R.B. Ramesh at the hands of IM Himanshu Sharma and Gujarat’s GM Tejas Bakre suffering his 2nd consecutive loss to IM Prathamesh Mokal in a plus position on time.
