44th National "A" Chess Championship                                                     Event Code : 055-2006/GUJ

Rohit & Suvrajit Shines, Ganguly Consolidates
By Praful Zaveri

Untitled 17-year old G.Rohit from Andhra Pradesh and IM Suvrajit Saha of Eastern Railways created big upsets by scoring over their fancied rivals, 3rd seeded IM D.P. Singh and GM Pravin Thipsay respectively in the 12th & penultimate round of the Atul 44th National A Chess Championship in progress at Atul Club.

The sole overnight leader and top-seeded, GM Surya Sekhar Ganguly meanwhile consolidated his position with a draw against 17-year old G.N. Gopal to be on course for the 4th successive title with a score of 8.5 points. The current ‘Arjuna’ awardee now needs only a draw to retain the title as he stands better in the tie-break with a higher average rating.

The second spot is occupied by GM Deepan Chakravarthy & IM Arun Prasad with a score of 8 points. Deepan took a short draw with IM Saptarshi Roy Chowdhury and IM Arun Prasad stopped the dream run of 16-year old, Aswin Jayram of Tamil Nadu. Both, Deepan and Arun still stand a theoretical chance of winning the championship.

The third spot is occupied by 5 players - G.N. Gopal, GM Abhijit Kunte, G. Rohit, Suvrajit Saha and GM Neelotpal Das with a score of 7.5 points. They would now be fighting for one of the six berths in the Indian Chess team to represent country in the international chess events.

With the new generation of players like Deepan, Gopal, Arun Prasad, Rohit and Neelotpal staking a claim in the Indian team, the old guards like GM Dibyendu Barua and GM Pravin Thipsay have struggled and, will now need a miracle in the last round to make into the team.

The 13th & last round is scheduled tomorrow – 29th of December 2006 at 10.00 followed by the prize distribution ceremony at 17.00 hours.
