Deepan Beats Kunte, joins Ganguly in the Lead
By Praful Zaveri

4th seeded GM Deepan Chakjravarthy of Tamil Nadu, representing Petroleum Sports Promotion Board created a minor upset by beating 2nd seed GM Abhijit Kunte in style to join overnight leader, GM Surya Sekhar Ganguly in the lead at the end of 10th round of the Atul 44th National A Chess Championship of India in progress here at Atul.

Kunte, playing black, opted for the sharp line of the Sicilian defense by sacrificing a pawn on the 13th move to break open the castled position of Deepan. He created further complications by forgoing castling to launch a counter-attack with his two Bishops. However, Deepan proved equal to the task by combining defense with attack on the uncastled King. Kunte was forced to give up one more pawn on the 20th move, after which the young Grandmaster from Madurai romped home in 30-moves.

With Ganguly failing to break the dead-lock against Arun Prasad after 39 moves on the top board, now shares lead with Deepan with a score of 7 points in the this 45-player field.

On the 3rd board, IM D.P. Singh of Jharkhand who is 3rd seeded played an entertaining game with 16-year old Ashwin Jayram of Tamil Nadu. In a battle of fluctuating fortunes arising out of the Grunfeld Defense, Ashwin matched his higher rated opponent in the opening and came out better on material count in the middle-game by winning 2-pawns however, D.P. Singh shifted the balance in his favour by launching an all-out attack against Ashwin’s King to win the game in 63-moves. The win allowed D.P. Singh to join Arun Prasad on the 2nd spot with a score of 6.5.

On 4th and 5th boards, experienced GM Pravin Thipsay & Dibyendu Barua were able to survive scare against their opponent G.N. Gopal & Rohit respectively and are now occupying the 3rd spot with 6 points along with 7-other players.

With 3-rounds remaining in this 13-round event, the fight for the championship is still wide open to decide the National Champion of India.
