Shazuli Surprises Favourites

Shazuli and Gunasekaran

Syed Anwar Shazuli of the Integral Coach Factory, Chennai won the 19th All India Inter-Railway Championship that concluded at the ICF Stadium in Chennai on July 31. This is the first major triumph for 28-year old Shazuli. He was also little lucky as he had the better progressive score after tying for first place with three others.

The final round saw a sad double blow for Western Railway as both their overnight leaders, Vikramaditya Kamble and G.Balaji suffered crashing defeats in the top two boards. This allowed four other players to tie for the first place on seven points. The tie-break scores favoured the two ICF players. Gurpreet Pal Singh of Delhi representing Northern Railway and his team-mate Ram Prakash were unlucky on the tie-break to take the third and fourth places.

Shazuli, who beat Vikramjit Singh (SCR) won the title on better tie-break while his ICF team-mate K.Gunasekaran finished second having beaten Kamble. It was a nine round Swiss format event and this followed the team event which was played over five rounds.

Dr P.Raja Gounden, General Manager, ICF distributed the prizes on July 31. Railways is India's largest employer of chess players. India is also the reigning World Railway champions. They won it in 2004 and will defend the title again in 2008. "For all railway employees, this is like a world championship," said ICF's chess incharge T.J.Suresh Kumar. This is an annual event. "Our increments and promotions are based mainly on this event," said S.C.Subramanian of Southern Railway.
