WGM Norm For Mary Ann Gomes

Marry Ann Gomes

Mary Ann Gomes of Kolkata completed her Woman Grand Master norm in the 32nd National Women A Chess Championship being played at Visakhapatnam. Chief Arbiter Rathinam Anantharam of Sivakasi confirmed this on April 17 evening.

It was a 11-game WGM norm. Completing norms is a normal ritual for this teenager from Kolkata. In the last Nationals at Bangalore in May 2006 this 16-year old made an IWM norm and was in the title race till the very end. It is very much so this year also. Her only loss was to Nisha Mohota this time.

Mary Ann Gomes snatched 1.5 points from the famous Subbaraman sisters - Vijayalakshmi and Meenakshi. She had won the National Women B at Kozhikode and is looking forward to repeat that success in the National A.

This was Mary Ann's best performance to-date. Watch out for this young girl's showing in the upcoming Chess Olympiad at Turin. Before our opponents start to celebrate the absence of Vijayalakshmi from the Indian team, they are bound to be confronted with a formidable opponent at the table in Mary Ann Gomes.

It was a classic performance. She finished second on debut last year and this year with the woman grandmaster norm in her bag, she could not be asking for more.
