Seeking a hat-trick of victories, defending champion Surya S Ganguly of Indian Oil, Kolkata started on a winning note when he beat Abhijeet Gupta of Rajasthan in the opening round of the 43rd National `A' at Vizag on April 3. In the women's event, defending champion Nisha Mohota (PSPB) of Kolkata was held to a draw by state-mate and debutant Supriya
Maji.
Tejas Bakre of Indian Airlines lost to Sandipan Chanda (PSPB, Kolkata) in the important game between grandmasters of the men event while Swati Ghate prevailed over Eesha Karavade in the game between two woman grandmasters from Pune. Vijayalakshmi, the record holder for most women's titles drew her sister Meenakshi while Aarthie Ramesh shared the point with fellow WGM
Harika.
This years event held a month before the Turin Chess Olympiad will be significant as it will select the Indian team for men and women. Anand, Sasikiran and Harikrishna are seeded to the Indian team for the Chess Olympiad and the next three players will be selected from this event for men. Humpy is seeded for the women's team and the other three players will be selected from the 32nd National Women also held in this A/c Indoor Stadium.

Full Attendance In Men: The 43rd National A Chess Championship started at Visakhapatnam with full attendance of 22 players in men and 19 in women. Three girls It will be a all-play-all. The arbiter is Prof Anantaram of Sivakasi and the appeals committee consists of Lanka Ravi (oldest player), Abhijit Kunte, Koneru Humpy, S.Vijayalakshmi and Surya S.Ganguly. The official site is

The event was inaugurated by K.Madhusudan, I.R.S. Jt. Commissioner of Income Tax, Vizag on April 2. The sponsor is Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation and the Commissioner is N.Srikanth. The women who could not make it were H.Soumya (Erode, TN), Bhagyashree Thipsay (Mumbai) and Tania Sachdev (Delhi) while Humpy who is seeded also for the girls event is playing in the men event.
Record Prize Fund: The total prize fund is Rs.3.97 lakhs with the men's event taking a bigger share of Rs.2.65 lakhs and the girls event the rest of the Rs.1.32
lakhs.
