Anand Creates Tournament Record, Crosses 2800 Mark

Viswanathan Anand created a record on January 29 when he won the Corus Chess Tournament at Wijk aan Zee in the Netherlands for a record fifth time. No player had won this more than four times.

Anand, the 1969 born Chennai chess maestro had won the title in 1989, 1998, 2003 and 2004. In the final round, Anand scored a brilliant victory over Boris Gelfand of Israel to score 9/13 and tie for the first place with World Champion Veselin Topalov of Bulgaria. Topalov who was leading was held to a draw by Peter Leko. The tournament, a category 19 event is likely to be the strongest for the year.

Anand is also climbing a summit as he is crossing the 2800 rating mark. At best Anand was 2798 in the middle of 1998 when he won the Madrid Magistral International that year. Anand suffered one loss to his old foe Gata Kamsky and played great quality chess.
