India Win Asian Team Title For The First Time

After giving out a sensational performance, top seed team India won the 14th Asian Team Championship for the first time at Esfahan in Iran from Dec 20-28. Indian women finished second.

Significantly, India was the top seed in men and second seed in women.

The event was a six team double round robin for men and a four team double round robin for women.

Many frontline Asian teams like China, Indonesia, Philippines and Kazakhstan did not compete this time. India also won despite being without V.Anand and P.Harikrishna.

Our best performer was Sandipan Chanda who clocked a rating performance of 2668. Sasikiran, Ganguly and Kidambi played above expectation. Kunte would be losing Elo despite the team winning the event.

Indian points came from (in board order) Krishnan Sasikiran (7/9), Abhijit Kunte (4/6), Surya Sekhar Ganguly (7/8), Sundararajan Kidambi (5.5/7) and Sandipan Chanda (8/9).

Indian women started well with a draw against Vietnam and victory against Iran but two defeats to Iran-B spoilt our title chances in the women's section. Nisha Mohota played below her expected level while Swati Ghate did a shade better than her rating expectancy.

Anupama lost her only game. Mary Ann Gomes gave out a good show on the second board. Our scorers in women were (in board order) Nisha Mohota (3/6), Mary Ann Gomes (3/5), Swati Ghate (3.5/6), Anupama Gokhale (0/1).
