National Women `B', Sangli - Supriya Maji Wins

Supriya Maji of Bengal was the surprise winner of the National Women's B Chess Championship that took place at the Walchund Engineering College, Sangli from June 24 to July 1, 2005.

Supriya scored 8/11 and finished first after she had the higher tie-break score after tying for the first place with top seed Soumya Swaminathan (Mah) and Alka Das (Jha). Thirty-nine of the 65 players had FIDE ratings.

Ten players qualify for the next National Women A. The first prize was Rs.20,000 and the total prize fund was Rs.74,000. The six seeded players from the previous National A are Nisha Mohota, Mary Ann Gomes, Swati Ghate, Aarthie Ramesh, Anupama Gokhale and Bhagyashree Thipsay.

Final placings (in tie-break order): 1-3 Supriya Maji (Ben), Soumya Swaminathan (MH), Alka Das (Jha) 8/11, 4-6 I.Ramya Krishna (AP), J.E.Kavitha, H.Soumya (both TN) 7.5 each, 7-10 Amruta Mokal (Mah), Swati Mohota (Ben), L.Iswarya Shobana (TN), Kiran Manisha Mohanty (Ori) 7 each. Others who did not qualify: 11-15 C.Delphin (TN), M.R.Sangeetha (TN), S.Nabeela Farheen (TN), R.Mahima (TN), Bhakthi Kulkarni (Goa) 7 each, 16-20 P.Sivasankari (TN), K.Shruthi, Devangi Patankar (Mah), Madhuri Patil (Mah), Mitali Patil (Mah) 6.5 each...65 players.
