Indians swept the medals tally (21/24) in the Parsvnath Asian Youth Chess Championships that took place in Delhi from Dec
7-14. We won seven gold, seven silver and seven bronze medals while only Vietnam posed some resistance to us winning one gold, silver and bronze. Other eight nations failed to make the podium.
Players from ten nations took part and the show was splendidly organised by the Delhi Chess Association at the Indira Gandhi Stadium. Chief arbiter was Hamid Abdul Majid of Malaysia. The event was sponsored by Parsvnath which also funds an International Open each year.
Indian champions were fairly widespread though Andhra Pradesh took home three titles of the eight titles. Girish Kaushik comes from Mysore, V.A.V.Rajesh from Andhra, K.Priyadarshan from Madurai, Vyshnavi from Andhra, Sai Nirupama from Andhra, Padmini Rout from Orissa and Dhyani Dave from Gujarat.
For a year-on-year performance, India improved and gained two extra medals and won one extra section. This time with 7-7-7 = 21/24 we improved on the 6-6-7 = 19/24 of 2004 achieved at Singapore last December. Going by this yardstick of performance, India should be permanent hosts of this event.
