In an official communique, FIDE, the International Chess Federation cancelled the World Youth Chess Olympiad which was to be held at Chennai from December 21-29. FIDE cited low interest among nations as the reason that led to the cancellation. Only South Africa had shown interest in participating in the event.
The World Youth Olympiad, a team event was never as popular as the popular biennial Chess Olympiad. The World Youth Chess Festival, an individual event, is the single biggest event for junior players around the world.
