Deep, Soumya Become Junior Champions

Deep Sengupta of Jharkhand, presently a first year college student in Kolkata won the closely contested 35th National Junior Championship that concluded at Sivakasi in Tamil Nadu on Dec 3, 2005. The girls section was won by Soumya Swaminathan of Maharashtra. Both Deep & Soumya were National U-17 champions at Chakradharpur 2004!

Both Deep and Soumya won their final round games to receive the trophies in the Rs.107,300 total prize money event sponsored by Kaliswari Fireworks and organised by the Sivakasi Chess Club. The rail rerouting (due to the breach near Tiruchi) took the players to the venue a few hours behind schedule and the organisers responded by reducing the number of rounds from eleven to ten.

This is not the first national title for both. Deep Sengupta is an International Master. Both also represented India in the World U-18 Championship at Belfort, France this July.

The leaders board kept changing and the boys section was fiercely contested. In the end, both the top seeds not winning the title itself is enough signal to show the intensity of the battles seen.

In the final round, Deep Sengupta crushed G.Rohit in a game featuring the time scramble while Deepan Chakravarthy tamed Rahul Sangma. Deep Sengupta won the title with 8/10 and Deepan took second place also with eight points.

In the girls section, top seed Koneru Chandrahawsa lost key games in the middle of the event. Soumya Swaminathan scored 8.5 points and won the last round title clash against R.Preethi (7). Mary Ann Gomes of Kolkata finished second and P.Priya took the third place.
