International Master Lanka Ravi stole the honours in day two also when he beat his second grandmaster opponent in a row to be among the eight leaders at the end of the second round in the 5th Asian Chess Championship being played here on Friday.
Eight leaders include two Indians, Neelotpal Das of Kolkata and Lanka Ravi of ONGC, Hyderabad. The six others are: Zhao Jun, Wang Hao (Chn), Zhang Zhong (all China), Reefat Bin-Sattar (Ban), Dao Thien Hai (Vie) and Marat Dzumaev
(Uzb).
India suffered a major blow at the top. Sasikiran lost in 44 moves with the black pieces in a Slav defence game. His young Chinese opponent surprised him in the opening and seized a significant advantage. Sasikiran with black tried his best by sacrificing a knight but his opponent returned the material and kept a two pawn advantage which mattered in the end.
On the second table, Sundararajan Kidambi, Sasikiran's one time sparring partner held the second seed former world junior champion Darmen Sadakasov to a fighting 52-move draw. "I was slightly better but got nothing," said
Kidambi.
Ramesh and his Chinese opponent Ni Hua drew in 58 moves in a game devoid of serious risk. "We both had to play carefully, I never got any chance," said Ramesh. The three Chennai players on the top three boards was an impressive sight but the day belonged to the visitors.
Ravi's victory was unlike in the first round. Wu Wenjin's optimistic bishop sacrifice in the ending to win cost him a point when Ravi nursed the extra pawn after returning a knight. Humpy rebounded to win while Harika drew.
"This event is so strong that it will offer plenty of grandmaster norm opportunities for our players," said R.B.Ramesh. Seven rounds remain to be played in this 86-player nine round Swiss format event.
