Lanka Ravi provided the spark the hosts required by inflicting a 40-move defeat on the fourth seed Murtas Kazhgalyev of Kazakhstan with the white pieces. He used a discovered knight check to win a bishop in the control period. After a well fought first round of the 5th Asian Championship at the Yusufguda Stadium, 37 players are on full one point. A total of 86 players from 16 nations are taking part in this nine round Swiss format event.
Top seed Krishnan Sasikiran made mincemeat of his opponent with an attacking 26-move victory using his queen and two bishops. Second seed and former world junior champion Darmen Sadvakasov spotted a tactic on the 18th turn and maintained his tactical spell over the game to score a fine victory in 28 moves with the black pieces.
Koneru Humpy's defeat in a long 75-move encounter to Himanshu Sharma however disappointed some of her fans. She was beaten in a rook and knight ending. Hosts had a mixed bag with Lanka Ravi of ONGC, Hyderabad winning with a good performance while both the girl wonders, Humpy and Harika lost to Himanshu Sharma and Iuldachev. While Harika lost to a higher rated opponent, Humpu failed against a lower rated Indian opponent.
The Chinese contingent consists of 12 players and five of them drew and importantly none of them lost. The total field consists of 29 grandmasters and is one of the strongest continental championships after Europe. In other interesting result for the hosts, Arghyadip Das held high rated Wang Yue of China to a draw in 26 moves with the white pieces from a Sicilian
Sveshnikov.
The eleven day, nine round event is sponsored by Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh. The Chief Minister flagged off the event on Oct 5 wishing chess to grow from strength to strength. The first round started at 6 p.m. against the official start time of 2 p.m. The reason is to "accommodate arrival of foreign players." As a result this update was also delayed. The games from Friday's round two will be played at 2 p.m and coverage can be followed on the top ten boards.
