Fedorov In Lead, Satyapragyan Moves Closer To GM Norm

Grandmaster Alexei Fedorov of Belarus retained his slender half point with a fine attacking victory over International Master Sriram Jha in the 8 th round of 4th Parsvnath International Chess tournament now in progress here.

Federov took his tally to 7.5 points out of a possible 8 and with just two rounds to come in the Rs. 7.5 Lakh prize money tournament, looks a sure bet for the winner's purse of Rs. 175,000.

Following Fedorov a half point behind are Grandmaster Pavel Kotsur of Kazakhstan and International Master S Satyapragyan who made another stride forward for his maiden Grandmaster norm after beating fellow norm aspirant Himanshu Shrama. In the next two rounds now, provided he meets two titled players, Satyapragyan requires one point for the GM norm.

A pack of five players - GM Surya Shekhar Ganguly, Saptarshi Roy, P Konguvel, M R Venkatesh and GM Ziaur Rahman of Bangladesh - share the fourth spot on 6.5 points each and all are running for top honours.

From the perspective of norm seekers Saptarshi Roy achieved his second International Master norm with a quick draw with IM Abdullah Al Rakib of Bangladesh.

Parimarjan Negi did well again to hold Grandmaster Niaz Murshed of Bangladesh to a draw and now needs a victory against GM Dibyendu Barua in the next round game to make his second Grandmaster norm. It may be recalled here that during the run up to this event, seasoned GM Barua had expressed his desire to play against Negi in this event.

Diwakar Prasad Singh Grandmaster norm chances suffered a decisive setback after he was beaten by IM M R Venkatesh. However the Jharkhand based is still running for his IM norm for which he needs a draw in the next round.

B.Sivanandan and V.Kamble are also amongst those who are running for their IM norms.
