Parimarjan Negti stole the limelight on the final day of 4th Parsvnath International open chess tournament by bagging his second Grandmaster norm after defeating International Master S Kidambi in the 10th and last round that concluded in New Delhi on January 22.
Grandmaster Alexei Fedorov of Belarus expectedly won the tournament with a quick draw against Pavel Kotsur of Kazakhstan. Fedorov won the winner's purse of Rs. 175000/- with a 9/10 score. The Belarussian won as many as 8 games and drew the remaining two for a fine performance.
In a four-way tie for the second spot, Kotsur had the best tiebreak and finished second, GM Ziaur Rahman of Bangladesh finished third, Saptarshi Roy fourth and M.R.Venkatesh stood fifth on 8 points each.
Also making his maiden Grandmaster norm in the event was S Satyapragyan of Indian Airlines who drew quickly with National Champion Surya Shekhar Ganguly in the last round to achieve the feat.
Parimarjan played a fine game to beat Kidambi. The 12-year old was in full swing against much experienced Kidambi in an irregular opening and showed impeccable technique to win the endgame.
This was the second GM norm by Negi in under three weeks after he had earlier made his maiden GM norm during the Hastings International Chess Congress at Hastings in England. The best women prize was jointly won by International Master S
Vijayalakshmi.
As many as 10 International norms were made from this tournament. Apart from Parimarjan and Satyapragyan, R Zhumabaev of Kazakhstan, Mesgen Amanov of Turkmenistan, Indians D P Singh, Saptarshi Roy, Vikramaditya Kamble, Arjun D Tiwari and Himanshu Sharma made International Master norm while 12-year old Padmini Rout made her maiden Women International Master norm.
