The
penultimate round produced surprising upset results in men and some long and
enduring games in the women section. Leader Deepan Chakkaravarthy and Surya S
Ganguly were felled in this eventful round. Deepan went down to Dinesh Kumar
Sharma of LIC, Kanpur despite playing white. Dinesh got the better in the
opening and turned down Deepan's draw offer and won the rook and knight ending
in style. Ganguly went down to Abhijit Kunte, also with the white pieces.
Standings after round 20: Deepan 13.5, Ganguly, D.P.Singh, Chanda 13 each,
Humpy, Kunte 12.5 each, Venkatesh 12. All of them have last round games.
Chanda v Deepan is the top pairing for the final round. Kunte faces Ravi,
Ramesh v D.P.Singh, Kidambi v Ganguly.

Swati Ghate of LIC, Pune overcame defending
champion Nisha Mohota of PSPB, Kolkata to be sure of a tie for the first
place. She leads the 19-players 32nd National Women A with 13.5 points. Swati
will take on Mary Ann Gomes in the final round on April 18. In the 18th and
penultimate round, she sacrificed a rook for bishop on the 29th turn to win a
pawn and also the game in a rook ending. The contest is so close that only
Swati Ghate is certain of a place to the Turin Olympiad so far. Mary is in
second place on 12.5 points after sacrificing a rook to beat J.E.Kavitha.
In the third-fourth places are Dronavalli Harika and S.Meenakshi on 11.5
points. In the fifth place is Vijayalakshmi who finished her tournament on
11.5 points. Vijayalakshmi will get a bye in the last round. Nisha Mohota is
on 11 points and could overtake Vijayalskshmi if she wins her last round game.
The curtains have come down on Vijayalakshmi this time. Harika or Meenakshi
will be the third player to make the team. Humpy is seeded for the women's
team but is still in the race for the men's team.
