Mr. K.V.S.Sarma, Secretary, All Vizag District Chess Association with chief arbiter Prof R.Anantharam

The 43rd National A Chess Championship has come to the exciting stage with one fight going on for the title between J.Deepan Chakkaravarthy of Tamil Nadu and Surya S Ganguly of Indian Oil, Kolkata and another for the qualifying race for the third spot among five other aspirants. Koneru Humpy is up after the recent slump along with Chanda and D.P.Singh on 12 points. Not far behind on 11.5 points are Abhijit Kunte of Indian Oil, Pune in hot pursuit along with M.R.Venkatesh of Bharat Petroleum, Chennai. Those with good nerves will prevail. One pairing which can impact heavily is the Deepan v Chanda clash. Two rounds remain to be played and all players have had their byes already. The men's 19th round on Easter Sunday saw all games end in draws except Kunte's victory over Himanshu Sharma.

Swati Ghate

The road in the 32nd National Women A is also similar. Swati Ghate of LIC, Pune was off to a flier of a start and seems to hit the victory tape. She leads with 12.5/16 and has an important game against second placed Mary Ann Gomes of Kolkata coming up in the last two rounds. Mary Ann is on 11.5 points. In the joint third spot are S.Meenakshi and Nisha Mohota on 11 points. Dronavalli Harika is on 10.5 points in fifth place. Vijayalakshmi is also on 10.5 points but in sixth place since she has only one game left.

Deepan

In the 17th round, Swati Ghate had an extra pawn but could not beat Harika as the rook ending was a draw. Meenakshi had a lucky victory when Anupama Gokhale lost on time in a position where she could atleast draw. Vijayalakshmi for once waited for her opponent to do something and Supriya Maji blundered a rook. The last two laps hold plenty of excitement in both events.
