Upsets
galore on April 14 afternoon in the 43rd GVMC National A Championship at
Visakhapatnam and the 32nd National Women A Championship being played at
Swarna Bharati Stadium.
After this decisive and dramatic day, Deepan Chakkaravarthy of Tamil Nadu and
Swati Ghate of LIC, Pune are leading the men and women sections. Deepan played
a draw with the black pieces to move to 12 points from 16 games while Swati
Ghate is on 10.5 points from 13 games.
In the
second place is M.R.Venkatesh of Bharat Petroleum, Chennai with 11 points from
15 games. In the women's section, Mary Ann Gomes of Kolkata is closely behind
Swati Ghate on 10 points.

The defeats of the duo, Vijayalakshmi and
Meenakshi for the third time together in round 14 has left Swati Ghate and
Mary Ann Gomes with a cushion of two to one and a half points. Further,
Vijayalakshmi's (8.5/14) defeat to J.E.Kavitha has put a question mark over
her qualification itself. Meenakshi is on 8.5/13 and could qualify with that
extra game in hand. Defending champion Nisha Mohota also has made a comeback
and is on 8.5/13 points.
In the other upsets, Ganguly unexpectedly went down to Sriram Jha with the
white pieces and Koneru Humpy lost yet again, this time to Sundararajan
Kidambi. Standings in men are: 1 Deepan Chakkaravarthy 12/16, 2 Venkatesh
11/15, 3 D.P.Singh 11/16, 4 Ganguly 10.5/15.
