Diwakar Prasad Singh Is The Find Of The Meet                                                                  Schedule

J.Deepan Chakkaravarthy

J.Deepan Chakkaravarthy of Madurai moved into sole lead with a fine endgame victory over S.Arun Prasad of Salem in the 13th round of the 43rd GVMC National Men's A Chess Championship being played at the Swarna Bharati Indoor Stadium, Visakhapatnam on April 12. Deepan is on 10 points from 13 games.

Overnight leader Koneru Humpy was held to a draw by B.S.Sivanandan of Karnataka when they reached lone king versus lone king in 59 moves! Humpy and Ganguly are on 9.5 points from 12 games and could surpass Deepan if they cash that point from the extra game they have on hand.

Supriya Maji

Ganguly proposed a draw on the 13th turn that was not accepted by D.K.Sharma. However, Ganguly latched on to a 59th move blunder to win two pieces for a rook and win the game. Girinath gave a strong display to humble D.P.Singh in a nicely played game. Eight rounds remain to be played and the top three will be selected from this event to the Indian team for the Turin Olympiad.

Swati Ghate continued to stay in lead after scoring a brisk 28-move victory over five-time champion and room mate Anupama Gokhale in the twelfth round of the 32nd National Women's A Championship. Taking a space advantage right from the start Swati attacked and engaged the enemy king and was threatening mate which forced resignation. Swati is on 8.5/11 and is leading by a slender half point margin.

Mary Ann Gomes of Kolkata scored a fluent victory with the black pieces over Ishwarya Shobana of Salem to keep the second position with 8/11. S.Meenakshi is in third place with 7.5 points from eleven games while her sister Vijayalakshmi is in fourth place with the same points but from twelve games.

Harika escaped defeat when Ramyakrishna failed to convert a two pawn advantage. Harika is the only undefeated player in this event. Nimmy George won a pawn in a tactic against defending champion Nisha Mohota but lost the pawn up ending. While Ramyakrishna needs to read books on converting extra pawns while Nimmy needs to concentrate on how not to lose pawn up endings!
