The
find of the tournament is Diwakar Prasad Singh (Jha) who has pocketed an
International Master norm and is still gunning for more in the 43rd National
Men's A Chess Championship at the Swarna Bharati Stadium in Visakhapatnam on
April 11. He beat Sivanandan to jump to the fourth place with 8.5 points from
twelve games.
Koneru
Humpy of Vijayawada maintains the lead with 9/11 after she was held to a draw
by M.R.Venkatesh of Bharat Petroleum, Chennai. Deepan Chakkaravarthy is in
second place with 9/12 after playing a draw with Saptarshi Roy Chowdhury.
Ganguly of Indian Oil, Kolkata kept his third place on 8.5/11 with an
important victory over R.B.Ramesh.

In the 32nd National Women's A
Championship, leader Swati Ghate of LIC, Pune took a bye and focus went down
to the next boards. Mary Ann Gomes of Kolkata won to close in on the lead with
a victory over last seed Alka Das (Jha). Swati Ghate leads with 7.5/10 while
Mary is on seven points. Well known stars, Vijayalakshmi and Meenakshi
recovered from the previous round losses to win and move to 6.5/11 and 6.5/10.
Nimmy George has finished the tough bend of the pairing draw and can now look
forward to some brisk scoring and make it to the top six. She drew the rock
solid and so far undefeated Harika (6.5/10).
Nine rounds in men and eight
rounds in women remain to be played. The event concludes on April 18. The top
three in each section will qualify for the Chess Olympiad in Turin. Anand,
Sasikiran and Harikrishna (in men) and Humpy (women) are seeded to play in
Turin already.
