Five Players Wins Both Games On Monday

April 10 produced exciting results and the day saw four players in men and one women win both the games of the day. It includes leader Koneru Humpy, Abhijit Kunte, Abhijeet Gupta and Arun Prasad. Humpy had wins against the tail - Sriram Jha and Thejkumar to lead with 8.5 points from ten games.

Deepan Chakkaravarthy crushed Lanka Ravi with white to move to second place on 8.5 points from eleven games. In third place is defending champion Surya S Ganguly of Indian Oil, Kolkata on 7.5 points from ten games. In fourth place is Diwakar Prasad Singh of Jharkhand who has made 7.5 points from eleven games. D.P.Singh had made an IM norm already from this event.

It was a heavy day of upsets in the 32nd National Women A Championship with the Subbaraman sisters - Vijayalakshmi and Meenakshi - being defeated for the second time in a single round.

Ramyakrishna trapped Vijayalakshmi's bishop and won the game after plenty of complications. Nimmy George who troubled Vijayalakshmi in the earlier round before letting her draw nailed her younger sister Meenakshi.

Woman Grand Master Swati Ghate continues her ride in the relatively easy side of the pairing draw to lead with 7.5 points from ten games. She beat Kiran Mohanty in the morning and drew Kavitha in the evening. The games are played from 10-2pm and 5-9pm when there are double rounds.

An unknown little girl from Sangli in Maharashtra went on to win the National U-12 Championship at Ahmedabad in 1992. That is Swati Ghate. Today she has moved to Pune and joined the LIC and is looking for her maiden national women's title. With nine rounds still to go she leads the 19-player event by 1.5-points. In second place with six points from nine games are Mary Ann Gomes of Kolkata and Dronavalli Harika of Guntur. In fourth place is Nimmy George of Kerala with six points from ten games.

Soumya Swaminathan who had not won a single game in the first half has suddenly woken up. On April 10 she won both her games to move out of the last place. She had three points from nine games and Supriya Maji is on three points from ten games.
