Chanda Beats Humpy, Deepan Gets Third GM Norm

Round nine was the most dramatic round of the 43rd National A Championship so far on April 9. J.Deepan Chakkaravarthy of Madurai Kamaraj University made his third grandmaster norm (10-game) with a game to spare by inflicting a defeat on rising star Himanshu Sharma of Haryana.

Koneru Humpy suffered a defeat to Sandipan Chanda with the black pieces. Surya S Ganguly and Deepan Chakkaravarthy have stormed into lead with seven points from nine games. Humpy is on 6.5 points but from eight games and could use her extra game to go ahead still.

Chanda's victory over Humpy, though expected if you look at the ratings of the players has left the title race little unclear. However, there is a lot left with 12 rounds still to be played in this 21-player all-play-all. Seeing Deepan Chakkaravarthy's performance in Hyderabad last month and the start at Visakhapatnam there is no doubt that he will become our next grandmaster by reaching the 2500 rating mark.

The tournament organising deserves credit and it goes to K.V.S.Sarma, the dynamic Secretary of the All Vizag District Chess Association. He had the task of working under time pressure as he had to mobilise various resources within the short period of time. So far things have gone very well in so short a time.

In women, higher rated players dominated the eighth round by winning their games with the black pieces. Swati Ghate leads the table with six points from eight games while top seed Vijayalakshmi with back to back victories has jumped to the second place with five points from eight games. The third spot is crowded with four players on 4.5 points from seven games and it includes S.Meenakshi, D.Harika, Kiran Mohanty and Mary Ann Gomes. Strangely in this round none of white players won. Black took the lion's share of six wins and three draws. Eleven rounds remain to be played in this section.
