Koneru Humpy's winning rhythm was broken by R.B.Ramesh of Indian Oil, Chennai in the seventh round of the 43rd National `A' Chess Championship being played here at Swarna Bharathi Stadium in Visakhapatnam on April 7. Humpy proposed a draw on the eighth move itself with the black pieces but Ramesh preferred to play on. But in four more moves, Ramesh changed his opinion about continuing by offering and getting a draw on the twelfth turn.
Humpy leads the 21-player event with 5.5 points from six games. Deepan Chakkaravarthy rediscovered his winning ways by latching on to a 22nd move opening mistake from Sundararajan Kidambi to win with the white pieces in 43 moves. Deepan also moved to second place on five points. Later, defending champion and top seed Ganguly joined Deepan in the second place with five points after defeating his Kolkata city-mate Arghyadip Das in a long queen ending.
Lanka Ravi changed his opinion on withdrawing from the event and this decision proved a good one as he overcame Arun Prasad with the black pieces after getting a good outpost for his knight earlier.
Eesha Karavade of Pune stole the action in the 32nd National Women's A Chess Championship on April 7 by snatching 1.5 points off the Subbaraman sisters - Vijayalakshmi and Meenakshi on a single day. She punished Vijayalakshmi in the morning with the black pieces for taking too much risk while in a passive position. In the evening, with the white pieces, Eesha took a draw after being slightly better.
Swati Ghate of LIC, Pune crushed I.Ramyakrishna with the black pieces with her central passed pawns proving too strong for the outside passed pawns of her opponent in the middlegame. Swati Ghate leads the 19-player event with five points from six games. Mary Ann Gomes of West Bengal defended a bad bishop versus good knight ending to draw WGM Harika and move to second place with 4.5 points. Kiran Mohanty of Orissa who got a lucky half point is in third place with four points. Kiran Mohanty escaped from the jaws of a certain defeat when Soumya Swaminathan slipped in the ending to allow her make a draw.
In the last game to conclude, Vijayalakshmi drew Amruta despite holding on to a rook and bishop against rook advantage in the ending without pawns. Amruta was also short of time but was aware of which colour corner to take her king to. Amruta claimed a draw after 126 moves. Chief Arbiter Prof R.Anantharam awarded the draw as Amruta had made 55 moves without a pawn and had claimed it late. Earlier, Vijayalakshmi survived a big attack and was lucky to reach this ending.
