Humpy Defeats Deepan, Widens Lead
Third seed Koneru Humpy of Andhra Pradesh scored an important
victory with the black pieces when he overcame J.Deepan
Chakkaravarthy of Tamil Nadu in a tactical encounter to stretch
her lead to 1.5 points. She is on an all-win course on 5/5 and is
playing like a champion in form.
Humpy is a known good starter. Many would remember that she was
also leading the 2003 Kozhikode National `A' with 5/6. Fatigue has
been her more serious opponent on that occasion. The national
championship is a long event with 16 more rounds to be played.
Sundararajan Kidambi of Bharat Petroleum, Chennai defeated
Girinath with the black pieces to join Deepan Chakkaravarthy in
the second place on 3.5/5.
Swati Ghate of LIC who had moved from Sangli to Pune a few years
ago is leading the 32nd National Women A Championship with maximum
four points from as many games at the Swarna Bharathi Indoor
Stadium on April 6. Fifteen rounds remain to be played in this
event.
Kiran Mohanty is in second place with 3.5 points. In the game
between those with an all-win record - Ramyakrishna and Kiran
Mohanthy - ended in a draw. In two other significant games,
Meenakshi beat defending champion Nisha Mohota and Mary Ann Gomes
held Vijayalakshmi to a creditable draw.
Swati Ghate has faced the easier end of the pairing while World
No.11 Vijayalakshmi, Harika and Meenakshi have faced the higher
rated opponents.
