Third seed grandmaster Koneru Humpy from Vijayawada and Deepan Chakkaravarthy from Madurai stormed into lead at the end of the third round in the 43rd National `A' Chess Championship being played at the Swarna Barathi Indoor Stadium in Visakhapatnam on April 4. Both the teenaged stars recorded their third straight victory to jointly lead with three full points.
Humpy won with the black pieces against South Central Railway's P.D.S.Girinath while Deepan powered past M.R.Venkatesh with the white pieces. A total of 18 rounds remain to be played in this 21-player round robin event.
R.B.Ramesh was held to a draw by the lowest rated player of the meet, Thejkumar. Karnataka's highest rated player ever, B.S.Shivananda has started with three draws but soon one can expect him to start winning in this marathon contest.
Ganguly and Kunte bounced back in the second session of April 4 to recover. The top three players will qualify for the Turin Olympiad to be held next month. In case Humpy finishes in the top three in men, she will have the choice of playing for the men team or the top board in the women's team.
