Ganguly Scores A Hat-trick                                                                                          Schedule

Swathi Ghate

Surya Shekar Ganguly of Indian Oil, Kolkata did complete a hat-trick to win the 43rd National A Chess Championship with a better tie-break than Sandipan Chanda and Diwakar Prasad Singh. All three of them tied for first place with 14/20 and will represent India in the Turin Chess Olympiad together with Anand, Sasikiran and Harikrishna.

Ganguly had his moments before scoring that crucial final round win to keep his score at 14. Chanda pulled down Deepan Chakkaravarthy in a grand final round game to retain his number two place. Diwakar Prasad Singh took the deserved third place with 14 points. Indian Olympiad team has one change in men with D.P.Singh replacing Kunte. The three players who shared first place will receive Rs.49,333 each.

Ganguly

Disappointment for Deepan Chakkaravarthy as he led throughout and lost the last two games and was pushed to fifth place on the tie-break. Nevertheless, he knows the pressure which leaders have in any sport now and also went home with a grandmaster norm. Humpy took the sixth place and Venkatesh was seventh. Others were behind. It is a long event and such a long big all-play-all will soon be replaced in future National A's. The first half was dominated by Humpy and the second until round 19 by Deepan. Then when nerves mattered, Ganguly and Chanda keep their cool and dominated together with D.P.Singh.

Ganguly has won the title thrice and every time on tie-break. Chanda has finished second after tying for first place on all three occasions. D.P.Singh is the find of the event and certainly our grandmaster material.

Marry Ann Gomes

The women's placings followed the trend that had set in before the start of the final round. Swati Ghate won the National Women's Title for the first time with a 14/18 score which included an impressive victory over Vijayalakshmi.

Mary Ann Gomes of Kolkata finished second with 13 points. She also bagged the 11-game WGM norm. Mary had played in the women A twice, taking the second place twice. Harika finished third and Meenakshi fourth. Humpy and Harika are in the Olympiad team once again. Swati Ghate and Mary Ann Gomes replace the Subbaraman sisters Vijayalakshmi and Meenakshi from the women's team.
