Tania Sachdev Shocks Vijayalakshmi

Tania Sachdev, an English literature student from Delhi shocked top seed Vijayalakshmi Subbaraman of Indian Airlines in the eighth round of the Win TV National Women "A" Chess Championship here.

Defending champion Swati Ghate of LIC, Pune and 20-year old Tania are in the lead with six points from eight rounds. Behind them are S.Meenakshi (IA) and D.Harika (AP) on 5.5 points. Three rounds are still to be played.

Tania shocked Vijayalakshmi with the black colour in 54 moves after the favourite opted for an unknown opening side line. Tania won a pawn and created a passed king rook pawn which helped her to win a rook and pocket the point. It is Vijayalakshmi's first defeat of the event. "It is a great feeling to defeat Vijayalakshmi," said Tania Sachdev, the 1986 born woman grand master.

Harika used better endgame technique to defeat Swati Mohota with the black pieces. Amruta Mokal and S.Harini moved to the fifth place with victories against the Sicilian defence of Kiran Mohanty and Lakshmi Sahithi. Three rounds remain to be played.
