Dronavalli Harika Held By Kruttika Nadig

Leader and world under-18 champion Dronavalli Harika of Andhra Pradesh was
held to a fighting draw by Kruttika Nadig of Maharashtra in the fifth
round on Sunday. WGM S.Meenakshi of Tamil Nadu scored over Nimmy George of
Kerala to join Harika in the lead on four points from five rounds.
Tied for the third to eighth places on 3.5 points are S.Vijayalakshmi
(Del), Swati Ghate (Mah), Eesha Karavade (Mah), Tania Sachdev (Del),
Saheli Nath (WB) and Kruttika Nadig (Mah).
Kruttika Nadig put up a good fighting after losing a pawn to draw the
80-move ending against Harika. Karavade held top seed Vijayalakshmi to a
77-move draw in a minor piece ending. Defending champion Swati Ghate of
Pune had to shed half a point to Tania Sachdev after they played 62 moves
from a queen ending.
Meenakshi was the only winner in the first six tables. "I think she made a
mistake after I went Qb7," said Meenakshi who beat Nimmy George easily
with the white colour in 25 moves. Saheli Nath checkmated Lakshmi Sahiti
using the black colour in a rook and minor piece ending. There are still
six rounds still to be finished.
