National Women "A" Chess Championship - 2006 @ Chennai

Swati Ghate Moves To Joint Second Place

By Arvind Aaron

Defending champion Swati Ghate of LIC, Pune crushed her state mate Amruta Mokal in the fourth round to move to joint second place in the Win TV National Women A Chess Championship here on December 10.

Leader Dronavalli Harika of Guntur, Andhra Pradesh kept her top place with an expected quick (14-move) draw against top seed S.Vijayalakshmi of Indian Airlines, Delhi. Harika leads with 3.5 points. Six players are in the joint second place with three points. They include: S.Vijayalakshmi (Del), Swati Ghate (Mah), Tania Sachdev (Del), S.Meenakshi (TN), Eesha Karavade (Mah) and Kruttika Nadig (Mah).

Amruta Mokal failed to close the centre on the 24th move and paid dearly for it when she allowed a pawn break by Swati Ghate. Swati won a rook for piece and soon her opponent gave up. In a very theoretical encounter, Woman International Master Kruttika Nadig won an exchange and the game in a long ending against National Women B champion Sai Meera.

Asian Under-16 champion Lakshmi Sahithi of Andhra Pradesh shocked woman grandmaster Aarthie Ramaswamy of Tamil Nadu after the latter did not castle and came up against a big attack. Seven rounds are still to be played.
