Three Share Lead

After a well fought second round in the Win TV National Women "A" Chess
Championship, three players, WGM Dronavalli Harika (AP), Kiran Mohanty and
Padmini Rout (both Orissa) are leading with full two points. Several time
champion Vijayalakshmi Subbaraman of Indian Airlines, defending champion
Swathi Ghate of LIC, Pune, Tania Sachdev (Del), S.Meenakshi (TN), Eesha
Karavade (Mah), Sai Meera (TN), I.Ramyakrishna (AP), Nisha Mohota and
Swati Mohota (both Ben) are in the joint second spot with 1.5 points to
their credit.
Top seed S.Vijayalakshmi and her younger sister S.Meenakshi won their
first game of the event quickly in the second round. Padmini Rout scored
an attacking 30-move victory over S.Harini with the black pieces to move
to lead. But soon she was joined there by Harika who grinded down Saheli
Nath in a long ending. Kiran Mohanty bounced back after losing a rook for
knight to defeat Nimmy George of Kerala.
The first woman grandmaster to lose was Aarthie Ramaswamy who went down to
Swati Mohota after missing a freak chance to draw in the fag end of the
game. In the top board, Ramyakrishna won a pawn and Swathi Ghate fought
well to neutralise the material and draw the game.
Those getting a bye are lucky as it comes with a full point. The fighting
spirit was high despite the scheduling of the game for the later part of
the evening. The Kruttika Nadig versus Baisakhi Das game lasted a lengthy
108 moves.
