Soumya Holds Vijayalakshmi
By Arvind Aaron
Pune girl Soumya Swaminathan stole the limelight by holding Woman Grand
Master Vijayalakshmi Subbaraman of Indian Airlines, Delhi to a draw in the
opening round of the Win TV 33rd National Women's Chess Championship that
got underway at Hotel Residency in Chennai.
Favourites found it hard to impress in day one of the 11-round
competition. Of the eight WGMs only three of them won and five were held
to draws. Vijayalakshmi was lucky to draw and Tania Sachdev of Delhi had
to work after losing a pawn and hold local player J.E.Kavitha. Nisha
Mohota was held by Baisakhi Das and Aarthie shared points with Chennai
mate Raghavi.
Meenakshi Subbaraman tried hard to win against P.Priya with a knight and
two pawns against the rook but could not and had to settle for a draw in
the longest game of the day.
Second seed WGM Swati Ghate of Pune scored an easy win beating Lakshmi
Sahithi with a brilliant king side attack. In the Sicilian Najdorf,
Lakshmi played weak moves with black to lose in 20 moves. Eesha Karavade
won the queen of M.R.Sangeetha and won in 36th move. Harika cashed on the
blunder of Amruta Mokal to win a queen and rook ending.
Ten players are leading with one point and there are ten more rounds to be
