WIM Norm For Amruta Mokal
By Arvind Aaron
Amruta Mokal is a third year B.Com student from the BMCC College, Pune. In
the Win TV National women's "A" Chess Championship she made her maiden
10-game Woman International Master norm.
"I want to become an WIM first, then a WGM and always improve my rating,"
said the 20-year old Amruta who was delighted at having made this norm
with 6/10. Though she lost to Aarthie Ramesh on Dec 15 this
girl said she liked this game very much.
I liked this playing condition here in Chennai very much said Amruta. Her
father, a boxer and bridge player introduced her and her older brother
Prathamesh Mokal into chess when they were seven. She now prepares and
learns from her laptop by herself. She did not play for Pune University
since they did not have other women accompanying the team!
She has played in three overseas events. She won the National Sub-Junior
at Raipur in 2001 and represented India in the world championships at
Greece. Later, she played in the world University games at Malaysia and
also went to Malaysia again for an open tournament.
Amruta's favourite players are Fischer and Kasparov and the reasoning is
that they are aggressive players. She has other interests too. She watches
all movies and is on the movie channel and also listens to music and
browses the net with her laptop.
Amruta has played two National Women A events and says she prefers the
round-robin format to the Swiss. Now, I am more tired after the
Commonwealth and other events. She has beaten many players including IM
R.Balasubramaniam and B.S.Sivanandan.
She has no coach and no sponsor. She has undergone camps run by the AICF
under Lisenko, Vladimirov and Sherbakov. She thinks more coaching helps
younger players like her. Amruta has visited some temples in
Mylapore area which is famous for it but does not believe in God.
Her favourite venue is not Sangli where she loses a lot by Pune itself.
Expect Amruta to become a Woman International Master soon.
