Tania Sachdev Wins National Women's A Title

By Arvind Aaron

Tania Sachdev of Delhi sponsored by the Indian Airlines drew her final round game against Aarthie Ramaswamy and won the Win TV National Women's "A" Chess Championship here this afternoon. Tania totalled eight points and did not require the tie-break after an eventful eleventh and final round.

After the draw, two things had to go well for 20-year old Tania and they happened. Harika and Vijayalakshmi required a win to share points with Tania and win the title on tie-break. Harika only drew a better ending against Nisha Mohota while Vijayalakshmi lost unexpectedly to Amruta Mokal of Maharashtra.

"This was a much stronger event than the Asian Junior title I had won before," said the new Indian queen Tania. Tania defended well with the black pieces and accepted the draw offer that Aarthie made on the 30th turn. Tania won five games and drew six for her maiden title. Tania is into the team for the first time and received the gold medal and also Rs.38,000 cash prize.

World under-18 girls champion Dronavalli Harika had her title opportunity, slipped, made a draw and took the second prize of Rs.24,000. S.Meenakshi of Indian Airlines is back in the Indian team after defeating Woman International Master Kruttika Nadig of Pune in a rook and minor piece ending. She took home Rs.16,000.

Aarthie Ramaswamy finished fourth and is in the Indian team after a long gap. She worked hard and finished very strongly with 6/7. Six time champion Vijayalakshmi finished fifth and is feeling the heat year after year. A win would have given her the seventh title but she lost. Amruta Mokal who finished sixth played a brilliant game to defeat Vijayalakshmi and extend her WIM norm to eleven games and find a place in the Indian team for the first time.

In the evening, Mrs Sudha Devanathan distributed cash prizes to the top 17 players and medals the first three. Krishnan Sasikiran who was the captain of the Indian chess team that won a gold medal in the Asian Games was the guest of honour. The All India Chess Federation organised the event in an excellent manner.
