33rd National  Women "B" Chess Championship

Top Seed Nimmy George Among Leaders

By Arvind Aaron, Press Officer

Top seed Nimmy George of Aluva, Kerala is among the 19 leaders with full points after round two in the 33rd St Joseph's National Women B Championship on Sep 20 morning. Nimmy took advantage of her opponent's poor knowledge of the Giuoco Piano to win with ease very quickly. She played with the white pieces and did not allow black to castle and was threatening mate which forced resignation from the Andhra opponent.

M.R.Sangeetha, a former National Women A player from Tamil Nadu is writing and signing her name as R.Sanggeetha. However, she lost her queen and Ketaki Kulkarni, Maharashtra's fast rising women player cashed in the full point.

Atleast six games featured victories by lower rated players over the so called stronger opponents. Harini, Tamil Nadu under-25 champion organised a healthy king side attack to win the rook and beat Asian Under-14 champion Bhakti Kulkarni of Goa.

Others who caused the upsets were: P.Uthra, Jennitha Anto (both TN), Aswathy Balagopalan (Ker) and Sithalatchumi (TN). Their victims were Nabeela Farheen. Chandana Priya Reddy, Tejaswini Reddy and Sirisha Gutta.
Not all favourites suffered though. Iswarya Shobana of Salem took revenge for the defeat she suffered in the National Junior at Sivakasi. With a rook move she attacked both white bishops of Rajasurya of Madurai to sail to two points.
